Banastre Tarleton

Thanks for your question. After his defeat at the Battle of Cowpens. Banastre Tarleton marched into Virginia with Lord Cornwallis. Tarleton completed several missions in Virginia, most notably an expedition to capture Thomas Jefferson, who was then Governor of Virginia, and disrupt the meeting of the Virginia legislature at Charlottesville. Fortunately Jefferson and all but seven of the legislators escaped after they warned by Jack Jouett who rode 40 miles through the night to warn them of Tarleton's approach. Finally, Cornwallis appointed Tarleton to hold Gloucester Point, Virginia from American attack. Gloucester Point was surrendered along with Yorktown by Cornwallis in October, 1781.
