Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon

I went to Mount Vernon for a school trip to Washington D.C. The last stop we did was at Mount Vernon and I walked around and smelled the dust from all of George Washington's possessions and sat on the rocking chairs behind his house and looked down at the lake. Last we went to George Washington's burial site. While we were there, a Mrs. Barbara McCarthy needed someone to help her with the wreath laying ceremony so I raised my hand and she actually called on me to say the prayer George Washington said at Valley Forge for his country. After I did that, she wanted to have two U.S.A veterans do the wreath laying ceremony and she picked a nice blonde woman and my own father. Barbara opened the doors to the marble casket and my father helped lay the wreath. We got to take pictures with us in the tomb area and it was a really great day! We signed a book saying that we did the ceremony and I had the honor to get a copy of George Washington's prayer stating that I did the ceremony. I have it next to me and I look at it every day and smile when I remember what a great thing I got to do with my father on May 7, 2010.

Sincerly,
Ryan Wescott, Life scout of Boy scout troop 114

I envy the Washington burial site story

Ryan - what a neat personal experience you had at Mt Vernon. And your poetic-like description at the George Washington site made it even more picturesque to me. I would be interested in hearing other places you visited while there. I am envious. My only visit to our Founding Father territory was a brief stay in Philadelphia.
